HB 251/SB 488 is officially LAW! :)

It is official: HB 251/ SB 488, cited also as "The Walk in Their Shoes Act", was signed into law by Governor Scott on June 24th, 2011 and is now in effect.

This sexual violence omnibus bill is a huge victory for survivors' rights, key elements which the Change subcommittee of the Sexual Violence Task Force of Tampa Bay successfully added into the bill:

  • The law enforcement officer responding to a sexual battery is now required to provide, or arrange for, transportation of the victim to a certified rape crisis center.
  • Prior to filing a final report, the victim of a sexual battery will be given an opportunity to review it and provide a statement as to its accuracy.

While we will be focusing on legislative initiatives for the 2011/2012 session, we also want to make sure that law enforcement and key officials are aware of the important effects of the law now in place, and carry them through.

If you are interested in helping us educate the community and spread awareness on legal changes, please contact the Change subcommittee chair, Emily.

384 member Tampa Bay "Community Campaign against Humman Trafficking", is a grassroots organization supporting Clearwater/Tampa Bay (DOJA Funded) Task Force on Human Trafficking in areas of Community Awareness, Victim Services, Fundraising, and Legislation. We have a focus group anxious to objectively review new legislation being proposed this session of Florida Legislature and have collected various tools for that analysis and review; we are also anxious to make sure we are not re-inventing anything and that we can garner support for well examined proposed laws from both sides of the isles. Additionally we are interested in seeing nothing is added along the way to requiree budget constraints, keeping the bills as revenue neutral as possible. Our feeling is that we - as a grassroots - mostly faith-based organization can provide funding from several faith-based organizations, NGOs, private foundations, and other grant funding that would allow the law to be law=enforcement tools and not create further expansion of government to oversee.
